In 1919, Tara waits at a train station in India. She is approached by a solider in a British uniform who attempts to speak Urdu to her. Tara responds with perfect English. The soldier, Jimmy, is Irish, and they bond over their mutual colonialism from the British. They part, and when Tara is on the train, she realizes that she has lost her grandfather’s Rumi poetry book. At that moment, she sees Jimmy, who has her books, and they return to his room. Jimmy and Tara talk about poetry; Jimmy has an early version of Yeats. Tara tells Jimmy never to give in to the British. They kiss, and when they part, it is sad but inevitable. They swap belongings; Tara takes the poem, and they give each other their full names. A year later, Tara sees Jimmy's picture among the Irish uprising soldiers to be executed by the British.
