Plot Summary
Sukie is a 20-something-year-old woman who returns back home to Dublin when she learns that her father, Frank, is suffering from leukemia. Nathan, the man she lived with after her father became to abusive and her mother died, picks her up from the airport. She’s always had a complicated relationship with Nathan: they’re both attracted to each other, but he’s 16 years older and came to occupy the role of father figure in her life when Frank failed in that department. On the drive to his house, Nathan reveals that he’s engaged, and that his fiancé is pregnant. Sukie isn’t sure what to feel. She spends the night with Nathan, watching _Twin Peaks _and getting high like old times. The next day, she goes to visit Frank. Nathan offers to go along with her, but Sukie refuses his offer, citing how Frank has always detested Nathan’s wealth. In the hospital, Frank mocks Sukie, claiming that her love for Nathan is obvious but that she’s getting too old for him. She leaves and stands by the water, where she sees a dead body getting pulled out. Horrified, she heads back home. Sukie and Nathan watch television that night. Sukie asks Nathan to have sex with her. He refuses once, but then they end up having sex anyway. In bed, Nathan says that they should think things through once she’s back at graduate school in Boston. Sukie says that she’s not going to return.
