Plot Summary
Nick and Jane attend a party eager to share their recent experience with their friends. They've recently taken a 3 hour trip that consisted of them being strapped into a machine that allowed them to watch the world end. As they arrive at the party, they describe their experience on a beach with a red sun where a crab-like creature crawled and eventually died. When the creature dies, an announcement comes over the speaker saying that they've just witnessed the death of the last living thing on Earth. Everyone at the party is bewildered at their experiences and Nick feels good having taken control of the social situation since no one else has experienced the end of the world yet. As the conversation continues though, more couples stroll into the party. These couples have also attended the end of the world but they all report different accounts of what happened. One couple describes an ice age while another couple describes an entire world covered in water, and yet another couple describes watching the moon explode. Nick is disappointed that his story has been stripped of its unique quality, and the partygoers are all confused as to why everyone has a different experience. Meanwhile, news reports swirl amid the bustle of the party. Disease-ridden amoebas have escaped a government lab, the President has been assassinated, earthquakes are shaking California, and business continues to boom for the time travel simulator company.
