Monk and Glennie are two seventh-grade boys playing catch. Another boy, Scho, sees them playing and wants to join. Monk and Glennie say that they will let him join in a few minutes, but they keep playing and saying that it will only be a moment more. Scho decides to climb up a tree when he realizes that they will never let him play. From up in the tree, he pretends to be able to control what the boys do: he says that he wants them to catch the ball, and they do so. Monk gets angry and climbs up the tree. Scho falls down with a loud thud; Monk swears that he didn’t do anything. Hoarse from the fall, Scho declares that he wants the boys to do whatever else they’re going to do for the rest of their lives, continuing the annoying little game.
