Plot Summary
On their way back from a party, Diana Schuyler is upset with Harvey, her boyfriend, and only wants to pass the drive back in silence. It is a snowy night, and just before arriving at her house, someone hits their car from behind. To her delight, Diana realizes that the people who hit them are her brother, Parmalee, and his college roommate, Harold. It is her first time meeting Harold, and he surprises her with a warm hug rather than a handshake. When Harvey finally drops her off at home, she attempts to end their relationship but delays the decision for another time. Parmalee comes back home first and says Harold is outside trying to fix a mechanical issue with his car. He stops Diana from going out to help him since Harold is upset over finding out that his grandfather got sick while he is away on this visit to their house. When Harold comes in, he is alone with Diana in the kitchen and comments on what a beautiful night it is for Orion. She thinks about the constellation, but he clarifies that he is referring to the mythical love story of Orion and the goddess Diana. When Parmalee comes back, Harold insists on getting his car running so he can drive back to his grandfather. Diana joins him while he is working outside, and Harold confides in her about his grandfather and the nostalgic memories associated with his junky car. They share an intimate moment and kiss just before Parmalee comes back. Diana admits that selfishly used him to get her mind off of Harvey, and Harold points out that all people use others. Parmalee finds out that Harold’s grandfather has already died and confronts him about it. Harold admits that he only just admitted it to himself and leaves to return home. Diana also returns home and watches Orion’s constellation in the sky.
