Plot Summary
Hundreds of years after a nuclear war, the Eastern United States is uninhabitable. Feudalism made its return as powerful bossmen rebuilt cities and governed them autonomously until the formation of the centralized government of the Pacific States of America when a group known as Espers rose to power. James Mackenzie, a career commander of the military group Rolling Stones, is taking it easy with his men when a telegraph comes, notifying him and his men of a political coup that ousted Judge Brodsky, a president-equivalent who was in favor of the feudal nature of the PSA. The replacement is Judge Fallon, an esper supporter that wants to get rid of the feudal bossmen and firmly establish a central government akin to the one in the old United States. Mackenzie decides to take his unit and rebel with the other bossmen. Tom, his son-in-law, sides with Judge Fallon and the espers, who possess mysterious and powerful psionic abilities, to unify the States. Unbeknownst to both men, a pair of alien entities is responsible for the coup and are directing the Espers and the central government in hopes of creating a human race that aligns with their views. As the flames of war grow, rumors begin to fly when Mackenzie discovers that the psionic powers of the espers, previously thought to be the result of arduous training, is actually an alien weapon. Mackenzie and Tom both wonder what they are fighting for as the war draws to a close and the alien entities are exposed.
