Plot Summary
The owners of Betty the beagle is given a modification that grants her the ability to talk. She begins to speak and her white family is frustrated thinking something is wrong with her voice box because she has the voice of a Black woman and speaks broken English. After attempting to replace the voice box, the family realizes that Betty has been Black the entire time they’ve owned her. Part of the family plans to move out to Philadelphia and the whole family decides to visit. Betty wants to go. One family member, who calls Betty "ghetto," makes a joke that Betty will just run away with the first Black family she sees and they’ll replace her with a dog that’s “like them” next time. In Philly, Betty comes across a cat who can also speak named Baby Boo. Baby Boo convinces her to try going on the other side of the fence that the humans say is dangerous. He leaves without her and Betty later goes to find him. She follows his scent and comes across a trail of blood. She sees a group of humans sitting around talking about the best way to torture a cat, debating whether they should drown or burn him. They place Baby Boo in a sack and tie it up. Betty runs and snatches the sack up by her teeth, escaping with Baby Boo. She brings him to humans and they open the sack, finding Baby Boo beaten, bruised, and burned. They go to get a vet that can take care of him. Betty’s owners will return home the next day but she decides to stay in Philly with Baby Boo and his owners.
