Plot Summary
Gwen and her husband Andrew finish tidying up the kitchen one night. As Gwen heads to bed, she sees Andrew stare out of the window into their garden. Gwen has seen Andrew undertake strange nightly routines. She awoke one night to see him outside on their lawn, staring up at trees. Another late night, he was randomly in his study. Andrew has been busy going for a professorship, working on many papers. Gwen hugs her husband and tells him there’s nothing they can do about their infant son, Henry. When Andrew finishes the dishes, he tells Gwen that all the natural environment by their house will be destroyed by the planned railway, including countless trees and nesting sites. At work, Gwen's coworker asks about Henry, and Gwen says she and Andrew “won’t know for a while." Gwen also feels like Andrew is trapped and lonely. When Gwen opens the microwave one morning, she screams as she sees an owl pellet, which contains prey remains such as bones and fur. Andrew placidly explains to Gwen that he needed to sterilize the pellet before dissecting it. That night, Andrew climbs into bed next to Gwen and says that he moves silently around the house because of his flight feathers. Gwen, confused and half asleep, tells him to go to sleep. At three AM, Gwen wakes up and looks for Andrew. She again finds him standing in the kitchen staring out the window. When he hears her enter, his head turns 180 degrees completely around to look at her. Gwen walks back upstairs, frightened, to go back to bed. She finds a feather in the bed the next morning. When she arrives home from work the following day, Gwen hears Andrew cough abnormally and then begin to choke. It sounds almost like squawking. She runs up the stairs to find Andrew bent over with drool coming out of his mouth and a large pellet on the bathroom ground. She turns away and sees Henry’s blue and white striped onesie on the ground in front of the baby room.
