Plot Summary
Since she was young, Jacky has always heard her grandmother talk about Caribbean folktales as if they were real. This time, she is making claims about seeing a Lagahoo, a donkey dressed in clothes that appears when someone has died. The last time she saw one was after the death of Jacky’s mother. Her grandmother also tells her about the time she realized she was a Suocouyant. It began with a burning sensation that spread until her skin dropped off, exposing the ball of fire underneath. Jacky visits her friend Carmen at the library and researches the term Suocuoyant. It is the Caribbean version of a vampire, an evil woman who turns into a ball of fire at night and feeds off of babies. A few weeks later, Jacky visits her grandmother to complain about a boy she is dating. Her grandmother tells her to be patient and recognize the other sources of love in her life. Jacky also mentions that Carmen has a new baby, and her Grandmother notes that she should visit soon with food. The newspaper reports soon after that Carmen’s baby died of natural causes. Jacky’s grandmother suddenly threatens her with a knife and claims that she knows Jacky killed the baby. The suocuoyant blood has been passed down to all the women in their family, and they are the last two left. The only way to defeat the rage and bloodlust is to focus on love, but Jacky was too greedy. She tries fighting back, but her grandfather destroys her skin shell permanently, and she escapes into the sky while burning up. The grandmother mourns Jacky the same way she mourned for her daughter, who also could not overcome the rage and had to be defeated. The Lagahoo appears out her window once again, and she hopes it will come for her next.
