Plot Summary
Greg approaches a farmhouse in Pennsylvania at night and begins to hesitate going to the front door. He decides that he should as he came all the way from New York City, and so he knocks on the door which is answered by a calm woman named Mona. Mona welcomes Greg in and introduces him to her husband, Frank. Frank says he has heard a lot about Greg and is on his way out to go get milk. He shows Greg to a guest bedroom and then leaves Mona and Greg alone. Mona says that Greg and Mona’s son, Mike, is asleep in the room upstairs. The two go to see him and Greg wants to wake him, but knows he should let him sleep. They return downstairs and Greg sees that Mona is much calmer and happier now than she was at the end of their relationship. Frank returns and the three talk about Frank’s work which seems to disagree with Greg’s lifestyle. They go to sleep and Greg has trouble sleeping with the quiet of the countryside. In the morning, Greg goes to the kitchen with Mona and meets with Mike who asks if Greg is his uncle. Greg says yes and Mona says that Mike and Greg will spend the day together while she and her husband go into town. The couple leaves and Greg and Mike walk through the valley near the house. Mike asks where Greg is from and he tells him New York City, which Mike says he wants to visit sometime. Mike bets Greg an ice cream cone that he can jump over a fence and Mike does so with ease. Mike and Greg laugh and have a good time and the two walk to an ice cream store and Greg buys some for Mike. They continue to walk and Mike says that he is tired and the two sit down in the grass. Greg watches as Mike mimics his sitting positions and he is filled with hope that his son will act like him when he is older. Greg considers taking Mike with him to New York, but knows he can’t do that to Mona. Mike seems like he is going to fall asleep so Greg walks with him back to the ice cream store and gets him more ice cream. As they sit outside again, Mike falls asleep on Greg’s arm and Greg picks him up and begins to walk him back to the house. As they are down the street from the house, Mona and Frank approach in their car and pick the two of them up. Greg says he has to go soon and they get to the house and Greg wants to carry Mike inside. Mona says no, and Greg is about to leave when he hears Mike come out from the house and run towards him. He picks him up and kisses him and they share a special look that calms Greg. He drives away with Frank thinking about Mike.
