As a teenager, Jeffrey's grandfather slumped over and died during Seder. Years later, Jeffrey brings Robin, his unitarian girlfriend, to his family's Seder. As he tells her more about Seder traditions, Jeffrey reveals that his older brother Dewey, who has since died, always said he saw Elijah when they opened the front door ceremoniously.
Jeffrey's eight-month-pregnant cousin Sheila gives the initial blessing, and the Seder begins. Throughout the dinner, Robin is eager to learn from Jeffrey's mother, Clara Rabinowitz. However, Jeffrey's father, Rabbi Rabinowitz, is more concerned with religious tradition and secrecy. Mrs. Rabinowitz translated the passages for Robin and explained the other items and their cultural significance.
When the time comes to open the door for Elijah, Jeffrey protests, saying it has no meaning. Prodded by his mother, Jeffrey begrudgingly opens and shuts the home door. A few moments later, Sheila's water breaks, and they rush her to the hospital to give birth.
