Plot Summary
Marty is a drug dealer from Ohio. He skims off the top of his boss Shayne’s supply to support his sister, Janney, who has twins. Usually, he makes drug runs with two other cronies, but this time Shayne is accompanying him. Before they hit the highway, Shayne directs Marty to pick up a barely-legal prostitute. Marty gets out of the car to give them privacy, and he thinks of Janney, who resorts to sex work to care for her children.
Meanwhile, a Floridian girl named Alex lives in a trailer with a tough pimp named Auntie Jodie. All Alex wants is to be a princess at Disney World, but the “executives” that Jodie keeps setting her up on “interviews” with all turn out to be johns. Alex endures abuse and clings to the impossible promise that Jodie dangles in front of her.
Marty and Shayne head up the coast, feigning back pain to get painkiller prescriptions and then filling them at pharmacies. On the road, Marty devises a plan to ditch Shayne and take the pills for himself. While Shayne meets with a prostitute in a seedy Florida motel, Marty waits in the parking lot and crushes pills into Shayne’s soda bottle. When the man comes back and guzzles it down, he’ll be knocked out, and Shayne can sell the stash on his own terms.
Suddenly, he sees a woman rush inside the motel room. He follows her, worried that his plan is in danger. There, he finds that the girl—Alex—has stabbed Shayne in self-defense after he got rough with her. Auntie Jodie is livid. Marty senses her predatory control of Alex, and he offers her a drink from Shayne’s soda. In a few minutes, she passes out on the floor. Alex thanks her savior profusely, and they flee from the bloodstained room. Alex explains her goal. Marty drops her off at the gates of the Happiest Place on Earth™, and he heads back to Ohio with the pills in the passenger seat.
