Plot Summary
Journalists, reporters, and bloggers are all covering what has been colloquially called the Cobb Street Horror as a new building is being constructed where it was torn down. The young woman is said to have disappeared if she even existed, to begin with.
An article describes a video in which a woman, Felicia Barrow, claims that her friend Vivian Crane, the allegedly missing person was a real human. The video is a snippet from a documentary about the disappearance of Vivian Crane, but the project is currently dead. The video is removed.
Vivian wakes up in the middle of the night. She feels that the house has a pulse. She wakes up for real in the morning and goes to teach college students as a professor of English. She has trouble with reality and understanding whether she is awake or not.
She knows the house she lives in is haunted, to begin with, but she moves into it because her husband Chris loves it. Chris is good-natured, born and raised in Athens, and a part-time indie musician. They both, however, notice the weird things in the house.
After living in the house for a while, Chris’ personality becomes colder and more distant. The house itself made Chris like this. Chris is influenced by the house.
Chris’ death is ruled to be a suicide after he is found with a gunshot wound to the head in his backyard in July. Vivian stays in the house after his passing because she feels that even if she moved, she would never escape the haunting. She also feels she should stay around in case Chris tries to contact her.
One night Vivian has a fever and sleeps in the guest room. She sees a bunch of young girls with pointed teeth. She attributes it to the fever but never forgets about it. People do not remember the story of Chris Cane as Vivian does. They think he never left town and was just an unsuccessful musician who was part of a band that broke up ten years ago. Online sources are mixed on which story is true.
Six months after Chris’ death, Vivian’s friend Felicia comes to visit. Vivian wishes she had not come because the day prior she had been marked by a figure in her bed. The figure left a tattoo of a snake eating its tail—an ouroboros—on her hand. She knows that whatever is in the house and has marked her will likely be after her.
The previous living residents of the home have reported paranormal activities and all have these same faded markings. They are all in mental institutions and attribute the paranormal activity to the effects of psychotic drugs.
Some people speculate that there is some physical anomaly that is causing things to happen instead of ghosts or supernatural forces. Many find this to be just a loose theory.
Vivian has a flashback to the night Chris went missing, in which she wanders around the house for hours looking for him until she finds the police in her backyard. A neighbor called the police when they heard the gun shot. People wonder why Vivian had not found him sooner.
Vivian drives Felicity to the airport and returns to her house. She wakes up in the night with a singular thought: she must leave the house. She runs outside into the night, and it is empty of light, sound, and people. She continues doing this again and again. She never thought this is how she would spend eternity.
Later, there is no record of Vivian Crane whatsoever. She, along with her disappearance, becomes an Urban Legend in Athens. There are some personal accounts of her existence, but there are no official records documenting it.
Before the house is torn down, urban explorers go inside and find markings, but they are not able to take any photographs. One female photographer manages to take a photo which shows the corner of the house saying, "This House Erases People.” However, no one can reproduce this image following that event. Some speculate that this sole image is a message from Vivian Crane.
The dentist's office which is constructed on her house bears the Ouroboros mark and young girls are seen playing outside.
