Plot Summary
Jane is a 31-year-old woman living in present-day New York City. She works as a props master on the set of a film starring Matt, a famous actor. When Jane learns that Petra, a model and Matt's previous girlfriend, died, Jane decides it's time to make her move on Matt. On the movie set, Jane strikes up a conversation with Matt. She reveals that she owns a famous painting that Matt and Petra had seen together. Matt offers to stop by Jane's apartment to look at it; he hopes to purchase it in honor of Petra. Ecstatic, Jane awaits Matt at her apartment in lingerie: finally, her route into the rich, carefree world of celebrity has opened up. Matt visits Jane, cooks dinner for her, and has sex with her. He leaves without seeing the painting but promises to return the following day. Jane anxiously awaits Matt's arrival. He finally comes, and he offers to buy the painting at $30,000–a figure Jane isn't satisfied with, given her assumption that the painting was worth $40,000, but that she nevertheless accepts. With the money, Jane pays off 70% of her credit card debt. She walks through the streets of the city, contemplating all of the new things she can buy. As she enters the bank, she sees a homeless woman begging for change. Jane walks past the woman.
