Plot Summary
In the year 2043, a young journalist goes to interview his favorite writer, an older woman named Maria Luisa. While they talk, she notices that his tattoo of a flower is a reference to one of her stories. She asks him about it, and he tells her that he has had a recurring dream of the flower, even though he has never actually seen it, and that he has become obsessed with it. Maria asks him to stop his recording, and shows him a scarf with a flower on it which is identical to the tattoo the journalist has. She then shows him a timeline — called a rhizome — that shows all of her experiences as a time traveler, which served as the inspiration for her writing. She tells him that she was born in 2164, and has spent her life traveling back through time. While she has kept her travels a secret, she feels she can share them with him because his dream means that he is connected to her. Maria shows him her garden, which has different plants from every time period she has traveled to. The plants, according to her, hold her memories. The journalist tells Maria that he would like to time travel, which she says is done by hearing a phrase. She says it to him, and he is able to travel. In 2243, with Maria Luisa returns to her home. The journalist has left her a note, which says that he will be gone when she gets there, but he hopes she likes how he kept it.
