Plot Summary
The wealthy widower Fei Lo always flirts with the young female clerks when he makes his deposits at the bank. When a young woman named Fur begins working as a clerk, she is told about Fei Lo and his flirtatious games. So, she is already expecting him when he arrives and asks her to guess the amount of his deposit, promising to sign the check over to her if she can get within ten percent. She doesn't guess the amount correctly, but she invites him to lunch and he accepts. They go to lunch in San Francisco's Chinatown and eat extravagantly, and the two beginning meeting occasionally for dinner, as well. When Fei Lo goes to visit his wife's grave, he is careful not to mention Fur or their dates as he talks to her.
Eventually, Fur asks Fei Lo for money at dinner, which his kids had specifically warned him would happen. The young woman wants to open a hair salon and asks Fei Lo to invest in the business. She plans to wash and cut men's hair, offering them an experience more upscale than a barbershop. Fei Lo is hesitant, particularly since his expertise is in real estate and not shopkeeping, but he tells her he will consider it.
Fur drives Fei Lo home from dinner, and he invites her inside for a drink. Immediately after arriving, however, Fur goes to the bathroom and waits there until the older man inevitably falls asleep on the couch. She then emerges and inspects the house while he sleeps. When she enters the master bedroom, she tries on the makeup that once belonged to Fei Lo's late wife, and then turns her attention toward the closet.
A few weeks later, Fei Lo sees a chocolate wrapper crumpled on the floor outside his daughter's childhood room. The room is not used anymore, so he quickly realizes that it was Fur who ate the chocolate, concluding that she must have wandered the house. He angrily dials her number, but she does not answer any of his calls. The man suspects she may have stolen something, but he is not sure what. Then he remembers seeing a woman walking in a fur coat, her back to him, in the city a few days ago and at first mistaking her for his wife. Without even checking the closet, Fei Lo knows it was Fur wearing his wife's old coat.
Because Fur still will not answer his calls, Fei Lo begins visiting a restaurant weekly, one that he knows she frequents. One night, he sees her across the restaurant, standing with a group of men. After his meal, Fei Lo goes to the restroom but finds the men's room is out of order. He uses the women's room, instead, following the suggestion of the sign posted on the door. While he is washing his hands, Fur enters the room and stands behind him. He can see her in the mirror, but she instructs him not to turn around. Fur tells Fei Lo that she is dating a wealthy man, who has provided her with an upscale apartment and a driver. Fei Lo knows the man she names and recognizes that she must be one of his many mistresses, a fact that Fur herself is also aware of. Fei Lo tells her that her life would be better with him. It is Fur who finally mentions the coat and admits to stealing it. She then apologizes, to the man's surprise, and he starts to turn toward her, but she stops him. She then leaves the room, and Fei Lo walks out of the restaurant, admiring the cool night and the many stars in the sky.
