Plot Summary
A woman joins a convent in a country called Texas and takes the new name Sister Amelia. She is welcomed into convent life, and becomes fully a part of the sisterhood once she reveals her prosthetic legs and is still accepted. The convent worships a deity called the All Mother, which worships all things natural and avoids the unnatural. One day a couple of travelers appear at the convent requesting shelter. As some of the elder sisters were having disturbing visions, they were accepted with extreme caution. Their aprehension proved to be warranted when one of the travelers began transforming into a monster one night. The sisters, Sister Amelia leading them, used their weapons and training to kill the monster. Sister Amelia also killed the second traveler, knowing from her experience in the outside world that he was certain to have the same fate as his companion. When Amelia explained this to Sister Anglelita, the Mother Superior of the convent, she asks Sister Amelia what she thinks they should do to defend themselves against this new threat, as Amelia is the only one with experience with the creatures. Amelia explains that the creatures are coming from the nearby lake, and that they could either poison the lake or go into the lake to fight the creatures. But the suggestion to poison the lake was heretical- their were natural creatures in the lake alongside the unnatural monsters. So Amelia creates another plan to go into the lake and destroy the creatures. She calls a woman named Honey Washington who brings a submarine with her called the Zambian. Honey, Amelia, and the sisters all work for weeks to prepare for the attack of the Waja, which is what Honey calls the unnatural creatures. They craft a suit for Amelia to dive into the lake. On the day that Amelia dives into the lake, the sisters of the convent are fighting alongside the local sheriff and his officers to defend against the Waja that hatched. They are successful in their defence, but lose one sister Penelope. Amelia is also successful, but loses even more of her leg. But in the end, Honey is able to begin crafting a new leg to fit her. In the end, Sister Angelita gives Sister Amelia and Honey another mission, to go rescue a woman being held on a plantation who wants to join the convent.
