Plot Summary
Rita, a young woman who is committed to the locked ward of a hospital, gets a new roommate named Jane. At first, Rita is quite hostile, but never does more than talk. Jane is covered in bandages that, when removed, show that all of the skin on her arms and legs was skinned off, something she presumably did herself. When Rita yells at her one day, Jane bites clean through her lip to keep herself from crying, a sign that she is incapable of feeling pain. The main doctor on the floor, Rousseau, pressures Jane to sign a waiver to join a neurological study with another doctor with a much worse reputation. Rita feels bad for the pain she has caused Jane, and opens up about her life story. She was a tomboy, or possibly trans, but was forced to wear dresses and live in a way that was not right for her. After she ended up in a correctional home for young women, Rita attempted suicide and was placed in the ward she's in now. Jane feels closer to her after that moment, and when a particularly gruesome test is conducted on her by the other doctor, she calls for Rita to witness the male doctor abuse her condition for his career. Rita leaves the ward soon after, and decides to live her life the way she deserves to.
