Protagonist Leo Gold is convinced by his friend Sophie to attend the annual Anarchists Convention, which he had missed in previous years on account of a feud with the late committee-member Brickman. Difficulties arise at every stage of the proceedings, from where the event should be held (the building owners are unethical), to whether they should allow themselves to be waited on (yes because otherwise the hotel lackeys might be out of a job), to whether committee elections should occur before or after dinner. Old grudges and animosities rekindle, Sophie does her best to trample them out. Suddenly the hotel manager appears, bringing news that the group mut vacate the room because the Rotary Club had booked it first. The group refuses outright, chewing him out until he calls the police. All the anarchists get to their feet, rally and organize, barricade the doors with tables and chairs. By the time the two cops arrive they are standing united, arms linked, singing “We Shall Not be Moved.”
