Mr. Cromer is an old, arthritic man staying at a winter resort. One night, as he’s preparing to go to bed, a group of young people, consisting of two couples, enters the resort. They laugh and make fun of the old-fashioned décor. Although they want to make fun of how rustic and dated Mr. Cromer himself looks, they hold back. Instead of going to bed, Mr. Cromer decides to hang around the young people. He drinks with them, and then they begin to play games. Mr. Cromer humiliates the young men, beating him in arm wrestling and bridge. The young men and their wives bid him goodnight, sulking at their defeat.
Now that the games are done, Mr. Cromer has to hobble back to bed. Given how much he exerted himself, the act of walking up the stairs is arduous. He comes across the young men again. They offer to carry him to his room, but Mr. Cromer lashes out at them and says that he can do it himself. Once Mr. Cromer has disappeared, the young men express their pity for him, and they wonder why on Earth he decided to prove himself to them, considering his body’s feeble condition.
