White gentrification occurs on an island once inhabited by Indigenous peoples, resulting in mansions and vacation homes. The Duys and Richardsons are in two such homes.
Matthew Duy’s oldest daughter Elizabeth marries Quentin Richardson. Samuel, their son, grows up in their house. He experiences two hurricanes during his life in the home. Samuel has a son named Scobie and a younger child named Matthew. The two kids briefly grow up on the island before the three move to Greece. Samuel’s mother, known as “Nana” to the kids, visits them. During the holidays, the family gathers on the island, which makes Nana very happy. Scobie attends debutante parties on the island and finds artifacts from the past in the house. He finds photographs of his Nana and Pa when they were young as well.
Scobie continues to visit his grandparents in college. He notices the things that have stayed the same over the years in the house. Scobie revisits his grandparents after graduation when his Nana passes away unexpectedly in the night. His father and brother Matthew come to dump her ashes into the water.
