Plot Summary
1. The Fall of the Roman Empire A man sits at the kitchen table, listening to music and catching up on his diary entries, like he always does on Sunday mornings. Every week, he writes down notes from each day and on Sunday he fully writes them up. Just as he finishes writing Tuesdays, an unexpectedly strong gust of wind blows through the window and he goes to take in the laundry.
He gathers the laundry and closes all the windows in the apartment before checking the newspaper to find that no bad weather had been predicted. He continues to write about the week in his diary, reporting 80% facts and 20% short comments.
2. The Great Indian Uprising Around 2:30 p.m., the phone rings and he picks up. He expects it to be his girlfriend, but all he hears on the other side of the line is the sound of rushing wind that sounded to him like the Indians running to the war in 1881. After about thirty seconds, the line drops.
3. Hitler’s Invasion of Poland As he recounts Saturday’s events in his diary, he begins to write how Hitler invaded Poland but stops himself, remembering that that was in 1939, not yesterday. Instead, he recounts how he saw the movie Sophie’s Choice in which the invasion is depicted. At the movie, he sat next to two teenagers who were touching each other’s stomachs in the theater.
4. And the Realm of Raging Winds After he’s finished his diary entries, he listens to music and watches as laundry flies past his window in the wind. The phone rings again at 3:48 and this time it’s his girlfriend, telling him she’s coming over to make dinner.
At 4:05 p.m., the wind stops and he opens the window to find a black dog sniffing the ground below. When he returns inside he finds his girlfriend making dinner and confirms that it was her who called him at 2:30. He asks what she thought about the unexpected weather and she tells him it’s a mystery. He asks to touch her stomach and she tells him he can later.
In his notes for the day, he writes down “Fall of Roman Empire,” “1881 Indian Uprising,” and “Hitler’s Invasion of Poland” to remind him of the day’s events for next Sunday.
