In the future, a female detective known as Ms. O'Connor, is tasked by Helen Sharp to see if her mother was murdered. The media believes that the mother was murdered by her TAP device, a neural implant that acts as a computer inside a person's brain. Many people have been installing TAP in order to become more innovative. Sharp and her mother are huge supporters of the TAP device, and Sharp explains that if the police determined that the TAP device killed her mom, TAP could be taken off the market.
Ms. O'Connor asks why anyone would want to kill her mother, and Sharp explains that there are anti-TAP groups. This anti-TAP movement has grown as TAP plans to install chips in children, which many anti-TAP people fear can be dangerous. The detective immediately starts researching TAP and anti-TAP groups. In her research, she learns that people can illegally buy communication lasers, which can potentially hack into old versions of TAPs (which Sharp's mother had) and kill the person if the user of the communication laser says the <> word.
The detective then looks through all the anti-TAP movements and cross-matches them with people that live in the same area as Sharp's mother. John Dallaporta is the only name that fits those two categories. Ms. O'Connor talks to Dallaporta and grows suspicious when he refuses to comment on his anti-TAP beliefs.
Trying to get more information, the detective plants cameras by Dallaporta's apartment and bugs the pay phones near the man's place. She thinks the case has gone cold until one of the bugged pay phones records Dallaporta talking to someone about disposing a device in his possession. The detective believes that Dallaporta refers to the communication laser and she sneaks into Dallaporta's apartment. When she sneaks in, two people who work for the anti-TAP organization come in, and the detective manages to hide before being detected. The detective then watches and films as the two people dispose of the communication laser. Sadly, it is not enough evidence as the two did not say they had killed the Sharp's mother with the device or if that communication laser could use the <> word.
The detective asks Dallaporta to talk to her, and when she goes to their arranged meeting spot, Dallaporta is found with a bullet in his head. Members of the anti-TAP movement hack into the detective's TAP device and threaten her. They say they can frame the detective for the murder of Dallaporta. The anti-TAP organization then tells the detective the truth about TAP. They explain that TAP has already been tested on children, and it has hurt a couple of subjects. However, the anti-TAP organization cannot do anything as TAP is so powerful that the company has killed anybody trying to reveal the truth. Realizing TAP's evil intentions, the detective drops the case.
