Plot Summary
Kayla and S.T. are best friends staying with the Wexler family in Brooklyn for their class Shabbaton retreat. After Shul, S.T. pulls Kayla aside to help her start a conversation with Moe, the boy she's been eyeing. Moe invites the two to a party that night, and Kayla reluctantly agrees to ditch the kumzits, or singing group, and accompany S.T. They dine with the Wexlers, their host family, accompanied by a surly boy neither of them knows, who they nickname Surly Sruly. The party they find is full of older college students and when they locate Moe's brother he tells them Moe is elsewhere, giving them an address when they press him. Kayla manages to grab two drinks before they go. She complains until S.T. agrees to go to the kumzits instead of hunting down the boy all night, but when they arrive Kayla steals a cup of liquor and starts scream-singing out of turn. S.T. drags her out before more questions are raised, and Kayla agrees to go find Moe's party. Moe's party turns out to be a bunch of boys playing Magic: The Gathering in a dingy basement. They make a quick exit, though not before Kayla steals another bottle. Kayla can barely walk, and when S.T. sees Sruly across the street he agrees to carry her. She finds him quite pleasant to talk with, regretting her previous judgement. They sneak Kayla into the house and her and S.T. snuggle up, agreeing that a night spent together was not a loss.
