Plot Summary
Ellie is a middle-aged woman on a tour of Europe with her husband, Noel. They left their children behind in America so that they could spend the time together. They are very much in love, despite the long time that they have been together. Ellie listens adoringly as Noel reads out to her from Tycho Brahe’s childhood diaries. After leaving Denmark, they arrive in Sweden, where they visit the Tycho Brahe museum. Noel is giddy, which warms Ellie’s heart. At the museum, Noel feeds Ellie a raisin; he says that if she eats it, all of his dreams will come true. As she eats the raisin, Ellie has the upsetting thought that their dreams are not aligned. While all he wishes for is that she’ll get better from the mysterious illness threatening their love, she wishes to succumb to it. The day ends, and Noel converses with a group of passengers on a boat while Ellie watches, imagining Noel, clinging onto that image so as to comfort herself before their life is overturned.
