A man, Red Beard, regards his help-wanted advertisement for a tall, good-looking, and well-dressed man for the theater he works for. He knows that he is not really going to get what he is looking for as he looks outside the theater door and sees a group of dirty, homeless men who don’t really fit the description. He categorizes them as the type that are constantly looking for work and begging on the streets. He gets on a box and looks out on the group of men who shuffle in close and wait eagerly for his words. He picks out a single man in the crowd and calls him inside. He reviews the men one more time and tells them all to come back the next day, but that he is done looking for that day. They all look upon him with hopeless faces and slowly wander away like people who have had something stolen from them.
