A mother with two little girls asks them to fetch sugar for the cake she's baking. But on the way back from the store, they accidentally tear the bag, spilling sugar across the road. The younger sister, Jo, decides to embrace this turn of fate and play with it, emptying the remainder of the bag too. Her older sister, Wita, eventually joins in.
They create little cattle corrals out of mounds of sugar, and are so immersed in their playing they don't notice the minutes passing until their mother appears. She has a willow branch and whips them for their poor behavior. Jo, upset at the pain caused to her, breaks away and runs towards the cliff nearby. Before her mother can stop her, Jo slips and falls.
Horrified, Wita and their mother run to the edge. Jo's body lies at the bottom. Crying, their mother kneels at the edge and cannot move. It's Wita who finally pulls her to her feet and up the hill.
