In a dream, a woman explores her childhood home, identifying what is familiar from memory as well as what is out of place. She reflects on the family that once inhabited this domestic space, recalling their stories and attributes through the possessions lying around in this dreamscape. She then wakes in her own apartment in the city and experiences a feeling of powerlessness against the inescapable passing of time. This is not a beloved house, but it is valued, much like other things in her life that she has worked for; but it is the morning of her wedding and she does not feel joy or anticipation. Having woken at dawn, she observes the lives of others through her window but is unable to start her own day because she is always waiting for something to happen - and it never does.
At length, the doorbell rings, and the man she is to marry stands there. Like the passage of time, this marriage is also inescapable - and the experience is soured by the knowledge that she cannot stop it from happening. She sees her future play out before her eyes and realizes that she is as powerless to change it as she is to bring back the past of which she dreamed.
