Plot Summary
A divorced father and his thirteen-year-old son Darren take a road trip to a spa resort in Safety Harbor, Florida. Darren is very talkative with his mother but silent and distant with his father. The father knows Darren is gay but has not come out yet. At the resort, the father reflects on the awkward way he expressed his support for Darren. He had told Darren it wouldn’t matter if he was gay, ate babies, or was a terrorist. The father thinks that he was just nervous because he loves Darren so much, and now feels like he can't bring up the topic of Darren’s sexuality ever again. Across the road of the resort, they find an egret beating its wings against a tractor next to an apartment complex under construction. The father sees Darren is sad and reflects on how his father made him act unhealthily stoic. They go out for dinner later that evening, but the only nearby restaurant is closed for a private event. The father still decides to go into the restaurant with Darren.
They crash what looks like a lunch event that was finishing up. When they sit to eat, group of men from the event approaches them to ask if they’re with their company. The father says they’re not trying to cause trouble. One of them mocks Darren’s lisp and calls him a "f-----." The father gets ready to fight him but decides to leave. As they leave, Darren yells “f----- out!” sassily. The father is surprised and proud of Darren for standing up for himself in a quirky manner. He later heads back to the same restaurant to find it being cleaned up, with some leftovers. As he drinks a beer, he finds two of the guys from the same group he encountered, including the one who insulted Darren. They have their arms wrapped around each other as they walk. The father follows them back to the hotel pool. When they head to the steam room, the father grabs the bug net by the wall. Despite thinking about Darren, the father places the bug net between the door handle’s loops. He kicks the door before he leaves to get the men to notice. He soon hears them shout and beat at the steam room door. Through the window, he sees their pale arms beating like wings.
