Plot Summary
A man lives in a world that has been ravaged by floods. When he heard that the floods would occur, he stocked up on supplies and prepared accurately, while others failed to do so. Every day, he turns away people who knock on his door, begging for food and shelter, in disdain of those who didn’t heed the warnings. One day, a man dressed in a suit named Gary knocks on the man’s door. Instead of asking for food, Gary asks for whiskey. Amused at Gary’s request, the man lets Gary in, on the condition that Gary will work for him and will not take his food. They coexist peacefully, Gary cleaning and doing household chores, never taking a drop of food. Eventually, the man’s neighbor’s house caves in, and he asks for help. The man turns down his neighbor, but Gary looks hesitant as the man does so. That night, the man has a nightmare, and he realizes that Gary isn’t there. He notices that he has less food too. The man finds out that Gary had taken his supplies to give to the neighbor and the people living in the neighbor’s house, leaving the man with nothing. The man longs for the peaceful life he once had with Gary. He comes to the neighbor’s house, where now he is the beggar, but he is ignored.
