A boy runs away from an abusive household and a magical figure from a cautionary tale: the Fool-Killer. Fear of the Fool-Killer shapes his whole life as he tries his best to live honestly and un-foolishly.

A moral judge whose courtroom decisions are sometimes aided by the supernatural judgements of a unicorn must choose between his desire for a beautiful young thief, and his determination to be morally worthy of the unicorn.
