Plot Summary
Dave is eight years old and wants to join his older brother, Milt, and his father at the market while they are ordering stock for their grocery store. The two reluctantly take the boy with them and, once stopping at the clustered stalls and bustling carts, tell Dave to mind their wagon while they order their supplies. Dave waits for them on the wagon seat, watching the business of the market. To his left, he sees three truckers, two white and one black, unloading crates of grapes. After their boss leaves them, Dave sees the two white truckers roll the wheels of their carts over the black trucker’s toes as they work. The black man does not protest, however, and remains silent. He instead turns to look at the fight brewing between a wholesaler and farmer on the next corner. Dave follows his gaze, listening to the wholesaler claim to a police officer that the farmer charged him more than necessary. More people gather to watch the bickering, but the white truckers yell at the black trucker to keep working. Sensing the tension in the air, Dave feels increasingly nervous. Slowly, all the people near him have gone off to watch the escalating fight, leaving him alone with the truckers. He then catches sight of one of the white truckers stealing a long cheese knife from the stall next door. The two white truckers wait for the black trucker to turn away, then one stabs him in the back. The black man cries out and falls to the ground, and the white trucker returns the knife to the stall. The two white men begin whistling, unaware of the little boy on the wagon. They break open a crate of grapes and smash them against the black man’s chest and back, making it seem like he knocked over a crate and fell asleep while working. Horrified, Dave stares at the black man’s unmoving body. On the corner, the argument between the wholesaler and farmer breaks up, and when members of the crowd notice the black man, they begin making jokes about the supposed laziness of black people. Suddenly, one notices that he is dead, and another says he has been stabbed. The policeman takes charge then, proposing that perhaps he fell on a nail in the crate. When the policeman asks Dave if he saw anything, the two white truckers whistle their tune and cast hard stares in his direction. Dave begins crying, and eventually an ambulance is called to remove the body. The truckers finish their work, and Dave’s father returns with Milt. When his father asks him what is wrong, the truckers whistle and stare at him again, leaving Dave crying harder. The three retrieve the items they need for their store, including grapes. When Milt offers Dave some, their red juice between his fingers, Dave begins screaming. His father yells at him, saying he should be ashamed of his behavior. Dave manages to excuse himself by saying they had left him there for a long time.
