Plot Summary
In a suburb of Austin, Texas, a physicist father says goodnight to his young daughter Marie. As she tucks herself in, he realizes that she is growing up. Overcome by a wave of nostalgia, he recalls the story behind the planetarium he set up in her room. The father initially bought the planetarium from a Japanese company as a gift for his wife. Since he is scientifically inclined and his wife is more romantic, he thought it would be the perfect gift to satisfy them both. However, when the father bought the gift, he did not consider the fact that both he and his wife are visually impaired. Thus, they could only register a blur of stars at night without their glasses or contacts in. When the wife discovered the price of the planetarium, she told her husband to return it. However, he could not, as he was unable to negotiate in Japanese. The father stored the planetarium in his research laboratory instead. When his wife left him (due to his robotic approach to emotions), he decided to install it in his daughter’s room. During lunch one day, while at work, the father spots a breaking story on the news. He runs toward home, desperate to get to his daughter in time before the disaster. As a black hole descends upon Earth, and the sky darkens with red, the father pulls into his driveway. He sends the nanny home and grabs Marie. Then, he anchors himself and Marie with jumper cables to a steel pipe in the bathroom. The father reassures his daughter, quizzing her on astronomy, as the house is pulled away. The world around them turns blue, then black. As their lives come to an end, the father wishes his daughter her last goodnight.
