Plot Summary
On a lazy November afternoon, Walt is lying in bed naked just because he wants to. He is the handsome, seventeen-year-old son of two poor farmers, who have seven other kids. As his parents busily tend to the chickens and clean the kitchen, he stays in bed until they finish to avoid doing the work himself. He thinks of his girlfriend Elsa and looks out the window at distant crows flying south for the winter. Walt is strong enough to work all day on the farm but does not see the point of doing so, plus he hates the work. He also knows that his parents will arrange for him to help out at the estates of their wealthy neighbors, the Jordans and the Pierces, who only come for the summertime. He jumps out of bed upon remembering that the Jordans have left for the winter, and he is certain all the neighbors will be going soon to take any leftover items. He recalls seeing Mrs. Pierce snip the flowers grown by Mrs. Jordan, despite already having many of her own. Getting out of bed, Walt walks to Mrs. Jordan house and sees Elsa plucking some roses in their garden. He sneaks up behind her and jokes that he has caught her stealing. She was sent to the house to retrieve a fur neckpiece Mrs. Jordan forgot, and Walt says he will help her find it. The house is pitch-black inside since the power has been turned off for winter. The only source of light comes from some matches Walt brought. They hold hands and walk through the dark house. Walt playfully kisses and hugs Elsa who reprimands him for always being lazy. They hear noises outside and head into the attic to look out the window. Walt’s sister and her kids are outside to take any leftover food from the garden. Elsa calls it trespassing, and Walt defends them. Suddenly, Mrs. Jordan’s missing neckpiece falls from a rod above their heads. They argue about whether they should leave the house while everyone else is outside to see them. Walt angrily leaves the attic, and Elsa chases after him. They share a passionate kiss in the dark house and embrace the moment.
