Plot Summary
A man, Doug, who can see the future is about to embark on a date with Judy, a woman who can see many varieties of the future. He is aware that they will have sex in the future and is very excited. There is intense mutual attraction and Judy explains that there are plenty of alternate timelines where they never meet at all. Both use their special senses and come to the conclusion that they will date for about six months and three days.
Judy explains that she chooses not to use her gift to become rich and famous because she has seen those alternate realities and they always end poorly, but she senses that she will have some very happy times with Doug. The date ends. Back at home, Judy's roommate, Marva, probes her for details. Marva knows that Judy believes that the relationship will end; as a result, she tells Judy not to begin dating him, but Judy insists that she must because she knows that something good will come of it. Doug has told Judy that he sees a future for himself where he dies at 43 with numerous years of suffering.
The two go on another date and share stories of how they discovered they were clairvoyants. Doug reveals that knew that his dad would die in a car accident and did everything to prevent it, to no avail. A week later, the two have sex and feel increasingly connected but still end up fighting. Judy accuses Doug of being a defeatist, but he counters by saying that he could probably predict her choices.
Later, Judy plays a game where she looks through an atlas and sees the different futures that could occur if she visited various countries. Marva talks with her about the difficulties of Judy's relationship with Doug.
They continue to date until Doug snaps and starts talking about what lies ahead for them. This upsets Judy. They fight about whether or not he should meet her parents, as they are scheduled to break up in ten weeks. The parent visit goes relatively well and Judy asks Doug if they could try to stay together forever, though he knows that this is not possible.
Doug explains that he cannot see far into the future anymore; this indicates that he will die soon. Judy feels as though he is scared of her because she is more powerful than he is. However, Doug explains that he is in love with her and wishes he could keep her around longer, despite the fact that he thinks her gift has made life too easy and rotted her soul. In her anger, she uses her gift to bring up humiliating things about him and torment him.
Judy becomes more bold and uses her gift in public as the breakup draws closer. She sits down with Doug, who tells her that he has a problem with her belief that she is innocent, despite the fact that she also thinks she controls the universe. Doug sees the future and explains to Judy that she will have two children, but one will die. Judy tries to run away, but as he follows her, he falls and breaks his arm.
This is shocking because Judy saw that he would break his leg, not his arm, proving that the future might not be written in stone. Doug disagrees and believes he was supposed to break his arm all along. Judy tells Doug that they could try dating again, but Doug refuses, as he does not want to be hurt by her anymore.
