Hoping to help her wife Shary form connections despite her specific type of dementia known as Rat Catcher's Yellow (RCY), Grace buys her the video game Divine Right of Cats. The game consists of navigating political intrigue and governing fantastical kingdoms with cat avatars. Grace customizes the gaming world with references to their relationship, hoping it will make Shary remember their past. But the more Shary excels in the game, the more she disengages with reality and forgets about Grace.
Her prodigious progress earns Shary an invitation to a gamer's conference. There, Grace realizes almost all the top gamers in Divine Right of Cats have RCY, which allows their brains to solve economic problems that can be applicable to real life. She gains an appreciation for her wife’s gaming accomplishments and is touched to find out that Shary named her kingdom after her.
At the convention, Grace meets Judy, who's gamer boyfriend also has RCY, and after realizing how much they have in common, asks her and her partner to move in with her and Shary.
