Plot Summary
After a zombie apocalypse, a girl named Caitlin is now the sole human inhabitant of Augusta, Maine - not that much has changed, because the town was never that active before. In this apocalypse, the zombie disease didn’t necessarily make everyone into bloodthirsty cannibals, but rather unlocked their inhibitions to act the way they’d always wanted to. For Caitlin’s father, he occasionally hits her, but he did that before anyways. One time before the zombie apocalypse, he even bit her. Now, Caitlin stays in Augusta with the zombies to care for her father. She records her life in notebooks marked with different covers, such as flaming motorcycles or punk princesses. She knows there are people alive out there because they broadcast manuals on how to deal with zombies, but she feels a responsibility to her father, who sometimes sounds like he’s saying her name. He’s tried to hit her a few times still, but eventually he calmed down and now they coexist in the house. One night, she sees him taking a toaster out of the house, and follows him down to the river where every zombie in the town has gathered with an item of their own. They all lay them down until it builds a sort of cathedral, and then one zombie offers herself up to be torn apart and eaten by the rest. Caitlin watches this in horror and cries, which calls attention to her, and the zombies fall upon her instead. Her father bellows and they back off, then he marks her forehead with his blood. Now, the zombies look at the mark and leave her alone. Still she waits in the town and watches them worship to see what they’re waiting for.
