Saki is a widow. Her husband, M.J., passed away with the rest of the New Mars population in an alien plague. Now, months later, Saki is assigned to explore The Chronicle and understand the colony planet's sudden and total demise. Despite internal and external doubts about her abilities to lead her research team, she takes on the mission. Saki and her grad student, Hyun-sik, who Saki finds out is her son's new boyfriend, travel first to an alien artifact warehouse during the end of the plague. They study the artifacts when Saki notices that another person got to this record first, leaving a blur in their wake. They record the blur and the rest of the warehouse, but cannot figure out who left it.
The team later discovers that the egg-like artifacts have changed color since the colony's scientists, including M.J., reported them. Saki goes back to her quarters for the night, where she drinks and watches old vid-letters from MJ. Her son, Kenzou, tries to encourage her to move on before going out with Hyun-sik. The next day, Saki and her colleague Dr. Li visit the planet's hospital four weeks after the collapse, where they discover another blur. Saki begins to strongly suspect it's M.J.'s doing but still has doubts because of the perils of future time travel. They also notice there's no organic matter in the hospital despite the thousands of patients and employees who died in the medical center. In fact, on the entire planet, the only organic matter that survived were the mysterious artifacts.
Saki and Hyun-sik visit the third site during the plague where they see M.J.'s truck in the distance. The widow, on a hunch, forces herself to watch her lifelove's last vid-letter to her. For a split second, he flashes his coordinates in his own projector to The Chronicle, which are set for the future. She hastily attempts to travel to him, but her son and Hyun-sik are waiting for her in the projector room. They make her promise to come back and help send her to M.J., who is indeed waiting for her and had left blurs as clues for her to find him. In their bittersweet reunion, M.J. tells her about the eggs, which are actually the physical forms of the aliens. They've been consuming the organic matter around them to connect and understand the human race. However, after consuming the planet's population, they understood humans didn't want to be consumed and stopped with the colony. Saki and M.J. eventually say their goodbyes, both crying, and Saki returns to the present.
Upon her return, Saki presses her hand on the artifact that holds the organic matter of all of the colonists, including M.J. She vows to tell both the story of the human race and the aliens.
