Plot Summary
A woman has killed her stepfather 33 times. Every day she goes through a combat training simulation, in which she has to kill the people she loves one by one. If she doesn’t kill them all, the simulation starts over. She hasn’t made it through the whole test yet.
She signed up for 99ers Elite Officer Training to be a hero. There is an American civil war going on, and she wanted to do something. She expected the intellectual tests and the physical tests, but didn’t expect this solitary test of mental strength.
After killing her step-father, a fairly easy task since she was never that close to him, she kills a slew of people she knows without too much trouble — extended family, roommates, and more. The difficulty begins when her brother shows up. He looks as he did when she knew him, still with dreadlocks and listening to music. She used to try and talk to him, but this time she shoots him.
Her girlfriend, Rocky, appears in short-shorts and a tiny bra. She used to try and touch Rocky, but by now she’s killed her fifteen times. She remembers when they first met. Rocky played the cello. She was angry when she said she was joining 99er training. She kills Rocky again.
Next is her grandmother. She remembers the last time she saw her grandmother, and took a strip of her quilt with her to training. She kills her grandmother––she’s never been able to do this before, and doesn’t think she can do it again.
Her mama, the only family member she hasn’t seen yet, appears. She remembers the moment she told her mom and Rocky that she had signed up for training. Then she kills her mother.
She thinks the test is over, but when she wakes up, she sees an old version of herself. She runs at herself and squeezes until something breaks.
