Plot Summary
As Waldeen prepares liver and onions for dinner, her ten-year-old daughter Holly insists that she is now a vegetarian. Waldeen thinks this new idea has something to do with her ex-husband, Joe Murdock, who she divorced last September— although Waldeen can’t stop thinking about him. She is, however, considering marrying her boyfriend, Joe McClain, who brings ice cream and Coke to dinner when he arrives. Holly tells Joe that liver is full of poison, but he convinces her to take three bites. He mentions that a restaurant nearby has a “Liver Lovers’ Night,” and Waldeen wonders if he brings up the restaurant to remind her that he recently proposed to her there. As Waldeen brings out the tub of ice cream for dessert, she proposes a Saturday picnic, but Joe says that it’s graveyard day— his turn to clean off his grandparents’ graves. Waldeen says they could have a picnic at the graveyard, and with Holly’s convincing, Joe agrees. After dinner, Waldeen tells Joe that in China, men have to keep house, and he says that if she marries him, he will do all the housework. During the night, Waldeen’s friends Betty and C.W. stop by, and Waldeen invites them to the graveyard picnic. The next day, Joe stops by during his lunch break to eat pizza with Waldeen. He tells her he’s worried that they’ll be too busy horsing around to clean the graves, and Waldeen asks why it’s so important. When Joe says that it’s a family thing, Waldeen laughs and says he doesn’t know anything about family, suddenly overcome with the feeling that Joe is an old friend who is now a different person. Joe tells her that one day she’ll realize he’s not such a bad catch. When Saturday comes, Joe arrives to see Waldeen still in bed, having overslept after a night of insomnia and bad dreams about her ex-husband. Holly comments that her mother promised to make a carrot cake but ended up not doing so, and Waldeen says that her ex-husband always called her undependable. Waldeen realizes that she’s afraid that Joe will turn out to be like her ex-husband. At the graveyard, the group eats fried chicken, drinks beer, and plays card games. As Joe and C.W. race around the graveyard, Waldeen sees Joe mouth, “I love you,” and finds that she can no longer concentrate. After the end of the card game, she takes off her shoes and jumps into a pile of leaves among the graves.
