Plot Summary
In the counselor’s office, the girl fixates on a family picture. The counselor asks her about her interests and hobbies, but she says she has none. The counselor tells her to focus on her future. When she leaves, to go home, she is joined by spider silk. Home is suffocating. She sees the spider she has known ever since age seven, when she saw it at her grandmother’s house. She asks her grandmother what it is, to which her grandmother explains that it’s grown-up stuff. Later, she finds out that it’s been taking the souls of her ancestors for centuries, serving as a protector of the bloodline in exchange. After her grandmother dies, the girl believes she can see her eyes in it.
The next day, the girl feels uneasy, as the spider is always with her. These days, she trudges through classes and spends time on her phone. She doesn’t know what the direction of her life will be after college. At home, her dad is busy with work, and her mother does chores. She doesn’t like having friends over, because of her secret, and she resents that others don’t have a spider. Later, she writes a poem about family, which she can’t write honestly about. It was a sleepless night, last night, and now she must go to school and work. She tries to make breakfast, but her mother is in her way and gets on her nerves. Frustrated, she locks herself in the bathroom, where she can no longer stand everything, especially not the spider, which has appeared with her. When she heads out, she sees the spider’s eyes on the back of her mother’s head. She collapses.
The girl wakes up at night. She believes that the spider has already taken her mother and will soon take her too. She checks her own body and is relieved until she sees the spider’s eyes on her fingers. She refuses. She heads into the kitchen, grabs knives, and stares down the spider. She throws one knife, but it misses. With her second knife, she jumps onto it, her body filled with rage, and tries to stab it to death. Her whole body burns, but she manages to find its heart . She hears the voice of her ancestors and wills her body back. Her family supports her in her demand. Her body then resurfaces from the spider’s, and she’s covered in matter, as the spider explodes. She sees her family around her. They are calling her name.
