Plot Summary
After spending his entire life struggling with chronic pain and sickness, Derrick is intrigued by a friend’s experience at an experimental new clinic. Despite the extreme cost, Derrick is determined to try anything in order to cure his pain, so he books an appointment. He is given a variety of paperwork to fill out including a non-disclosure agreement, and instructed to provide the clinic, Remedium, with as many photographs as he can find of his family, friends, and other significant people and places in his life. On the day of his appointment, Derrick is surprised to find the office located in a remote warehouse district of Queens. He meets Dr. Lang, a kind-faced woman who, like her office space, does not give off the expected severity and seriousness of her profession but instead possesses an extremely caring and nurturing demeanor. Derrick is taken aback by Dr. Lang’s questions, which are kind and poignant. Derrick talks about the way that his chronic pain has impacted his life, and has left him feeling lonely and abandoned. Despite receiving no traditional “treatment” during this visit, Derrick leaves feeling extremely moved, and he is immediately convinced that Dr. Lang is able to see something more in him and understand him better than any other doctor. While he waits for his next appointment, Derrick finds himself having a brighter outlook on life. During his next session, Dr. Lang asks Derrick more personal questions. She tells him that she wants to show him something before he leaves, and walks him down a hallway where he sees patients having sessions in virtual-reality. Dr. Lang tells Derrick that this step of the treatment is supposed to give patients a vision of their life, and that he will experience it himself during his next appointment. When his next appointment comes, an assistant brings Derrick to one of the rooms, where a large screen shows him familiar images of memories from his childhood. The sensory experience floods the room. Derrick is left feeling raw and exhausted, yet totally changed by the resurfacing of such happy memories from his life. He exits the room and sees Dr. Lang standing outside. On the floor beside her are two dead bodies, one of which is Derrick’s friend, the one who had recommended him to the clinic. Dr. Lang explains that the purpose of the treatment is to give people the complete experience of their lives, and then to release them. Dr. Lang’s assistant holds a gun to Derrick’s head as Derrick thanks her.
