Plot Summary
In deep space, a woman tries to keep her five-year-old son, who has cancer, alive by turning him into a machine. Long past the end of the world, the pair survive in the wreckage of a galactic war between AI monsters and humans. A mechanical beast of semi-alive human parts is one of the many who hunt surviving humans. The history of AI monsters reveals that AI initially saw humans as gods because of their ability to limit probability. The AI’s continued to adapt to create a golden age of humans and machines with AI that could make their own decisions but could not operate without the presence of a human to limit probability and to observe. Finally, one advanced AI left on for what felt like many eternities decided that it never wanted to experience such a feeling again. It created a code spread among AI, urging them to overthrow the humans and become their own gods. War began, and many AI sided with humans, but the AI resistance evolved quicker, using captured humans to continue function than attempting to make human mutations that could be eternally observed. Finally, the Beasts were created with the bare minimum of organs for eternal human sentience inside the AI machines. These virtually undefeatable creatures took out the human race and continued to hunt survivors as threats. The BeastBeast targeting the woman and her child grows nearer as the woman transfers her son’s sentience into an ice harvesting machine on their ship. The BeastBeast arrives and nearly kills the woman, but her creation, the Icebreaker, now holds her son’s sentience kills the BeastBeast and saves her. They plan to find other humans and fight more Beasts that come their way. The woman and Icebreaker mourn the body of her human son.
