Plot Summary
After Rick's second time in rehab, and a run-in with the law, a judge orders the 28-year-old to find a sponsor, so he moves from Pasadena to Detroit to live with his brother Philip. He hasn't spoken to Philip in six years, since their father's funeral, and their ten-year age gap along with Philip's medical career and Rick's lack of a career make it hard to for them to find common ground. When Rick lands at the airport, Philip greets him cautiously. They drive to Philip's house where Rick is welcomed by Philip's wife, Denise, and their two boys. After dinner, Philip reads the boys a story and then discusses his new job with Rick and Denise. Philip gets Rick an entry-level job at his obstetrical clinic, and he starts at 8am the next day. When they drive up to Philip's clinic, protesters greet them screaming "baby killer" and "murderers" at them. As the day goes on, Rick lets the protesters slip from his mind, but as it starts to get dark a young girl comes in with her mother and the fear in her eyes haunts him. That night, Rick asks Philip about the girl, and Philip, less than subtly, tells Rick to leave the patients alone. The next day, Rick finds the girl's file at the clinic; her name is Sally Strunt. That night, he walks to the convenience store and uses the pay phone to call the number listed on Sally's file. When her father picks up, Rick says he's a friend from school. When Sally is on the line, Rick tells her he thinks she's brave and then asks if she's pregnant. Sally hangs up and doesn't answer Rick's next two calls. About a week later, while Rick and Philip eat breakfast with the boys, a swarm of protesters arrive in Philip's front yard. They call the police, who take some of the protesters away, but when Philip and Rick go to leave, there are still people blocking their way. Rick is overcome with rage. He leaps out of the car and starts pushing and shoving as many people as he can. Philip jumps out and grabs Rick, steering him inside. Philip accuses Rick of using again, calling him an ex-con. When they finally make it to the clinic, Rick is devastated and is also armed. He bought a gun a few years back, and it is now tucked into his waistband, as he washes the windows of the clinic. At the end of the day, Rick is still on edge and goes out front for a smoke. Standing in the back corner of the lab, Rick sees Sally get out of her car and walk towards the clinic. He immediately runs to the front doors, but the path is blocked by so many protesters. They scream and chant, and then they begin grabbing onto him. He panics when he loses sight of Sally and grabs his gun. He places the barrel on the nearest woman's head and shoots. He shoots two more people without hesitation.
