Plot Summary
Mr. Andrew climbs up a snowy hill and reaches a small cottage at the top. Outside there are two kids who recognize him and they ask him if he has heard about the infamous Gilliam who is an active murderer who targets wives. Mr. Andrew says that Gilliam is nowhere near, but he does seem slightly nervous about the fact that there is a murderer on the loose. The kids call their mother, Edna, who is in the cottage and she seems happy to see Mr. Andrew, who she calls Andy. Mr. Andrew is in love with Edna and wants her to marry him, even though her husband has just died a few months before. Edna asks Mr. Andrew why he is up there and he says he is collecting pine cones for his kid sister, but she doesn’t believe him. He leaves the cottage to keep up the ruse of collecting pine cones and he is on the lookout for Gilliam in the woods around the house. After he leaves, the kids continue to play in the snow and another man approaches the cottage from down the road. The kids are wary of the man and ask him if he is Gilliam. The man says no and that Gilliam most likely isn’t near them at the moment. He approaches the cottage and meets Edna, telling her his name is Mr. Temple and that her husband owed him some money before he died. She asks if he has a note to prove it and he says no. She then says that even if he did have a note, she is very poor and can’t pay him back. He sees that she is telling the truth and begins walking back down the hill. As he walks down the hill he runs into Mr. Andrew who seems suspicious of the stranger coming from the cottage. They grip onto each other’s hands and both think each other to be Gilliam. They try to clear things up, but decide to go back to the cottage together to have their stories corroborated by Edna. They return to the cottage holding hands which the kids find funny. Edna tells both the men who the other is and invites them in for some coffee and a reprieve from the cold.
