Plot Summary
A middle-aged woman name Katherine, who was recently let go from her job, seeks out a man to sleep with one night. She ends up going back to his messy room. He is keeping it as a place to get away from his wife, but he has not decided to leave her yet. In the morning, Katherine appreciates that she now knows what deceiving her husband feels like. She start telling the man she slept with more about her history, even though she has not told many people about her feelings about what happened so many years ago.
One night, her husband Phair was later than usual, but she did not think much of it. Several days later, the police showed up at her door and questioned her about her husbands whereabouts that night. An old woman nearby had thought she had seen him go in and out a woman's home. That woman, Sharon Ritchie, later ended up strangled to death and left on her couch. Out of instinct, Katherine lied about what time Phair got home and held to that lie throughout the following weeks whenever they asked. Her husband admitted to her that he had indeed been seeing the woman, though Katherine never gained peace of mind about whether they slept together or not. The affair hurt her and she wondered if Phair was really alright with the act that she could not have children, even if he said he was. Phair was truthful to the police about everything else. He was accused of murder and put on trial but the judge dismissed the case.
Ever since then, Katherine had stayed with Phair because she loved him. Now that she has time to reflect though, she recognizes that the distance between them might not be able to be bridged. The man she is having the affair with goes back to his wife. Katherine goes on a walk and decides that she is going to leave Phair.
