Plot Summary
Aram is a young Armenian boy who lives in the San Joaquin Valley. His family is poor, but they are esteemed for their honesty. One night, he looks out his window, and his cousin Mourad is atop a beautiful white horse that he must have stolen. Mourad invites Aram to go out riding with him, and Aram agrees. They spend the night with the horse and then hide it away when morning comes. Aram goes to his uncle’s house where a fellow villager, John Byro, comes to complain about his horse being missing. Aram asks Mourad not to return the horse until he has learned to ride it; Mourad refuses, but he agrees to keep the creature for the next six months. Aram masters riding the horse, and when the six months are up, they walk the horse to John Byro’s stable. John sees them on the way, but the boys insist that the horse is not theirs. Because their family is honest, he does not suspect anything. They return the horse when John is not looking, and he is overjoyed that his horse has come back stronger. Aram’s uncle is relieved that the horse is back because now John will stop complaining.
