Plot Summary
One day, much to the confusion of the infertile husband and his wife, the wife discovers herself to be pregnant. The wife has no answers, no matter how anger her husband gets. The wife then begins acting strangely: she eats dirt and sits naked in their yard. All of a sudden, she finds herself going into labor. Her husband tries to help; but to their shock and confusion, it is not a normal birth. Instead, the woman gives birth to a pumpkin and dies after doing so. The now widower accepts the pumpkin as his son and takes the pumpkin everywhere with him. He takes the pumpkin to his wife's funeral. He walks the pumpkin around the neighborhood. He tries to enlist local children to be the pumpkin's friends. The widower takes the responsibility of fatherhood incredibly seriously. After much time with the pumpkin, in which it has not changed, the father realizes it is time to do something. He decides to carve a face into the pumpkin. While doing so, he sprinkles the seeds of the pumpkin into the yard. But the father cannot make a face he likes on the pumpkin and tries to take a little boy's Halloween costume to fix his mistakes. After Halloween passes, the pumpkin rots. The father is distraught until he realizes that the seeds he scattered into his lawn have started to grow.
