Epluribus Jones is a postman who dies after contracting tetanus. Upon dying, the townspeople of Trenton, New Jersey find out that Jones had been stealing their mail for years, leading to love letters, confessions, invitations, and checks never being received. The people despise Jones and mock his widow, Mrs. Jones, who did not know about her husband’s secret. With time, Jones’ body decays, his widow remarries, and the people slowly forget. Eventually, Mrs. Jones’ new husband, Mr. Martin, dies as well, leading her to reflect on the secret that her first husband kept from her. Although the townspeople have moved on, she remembers. Unfortunately, there’s nothing to do with that memory of a time gone by.
