Plot Summary
At eleven years old, Thomas catches a mouse in a plastic food container and watches it drown as he fills the container with water. Ever since, his experience of the world has changed. Everything seems silent, even though he can still hear people speak. Now, whenever he touches someone, he sees into their life, reliving their memories or even reading their mind. Recently, over ten years later, Thomas has begun to have a nightmare where he sees the shimmering figure of a woman in front of him. Terrified, he refuses to tell his sister what he sees, even as it begins happening when he is awake. When he first experienced this dream-like state, many doctors and therapists tried to prescribe him various medicines, but no one could explain what was happening. So Thomas has tried to shut off most of the world, including his sister Ange, especially after their mother's death. One day, when Thomas is taking a bath, the figure of the woman becomes clearer, and he soon realizes she is speaking to him, or at least communicating through his mind. The woman tells him she exists in a different realm with hundreds of people just like him and that they have been trying to reach him. Partly curious and partly feeling like he has no other choice, Thomas allows the woman to guide him to her realm. When he arrives, he notices he is still in his bathroom, but there is no one around except for the woman, and he is dressed in new, plain-looking clothes. The woman tells him that he was meant to die in the accident with his mother, but now that he survived, he is one of a few people who can save everyone from a terrible disaster in the future. She explains that their universe is one of dozens, and that they have the ability to travel between them. After listening to her explanation, Thomas agrees to help with her mission.
